He Lost His Son & Failed 30 Times — What He Learned About Leadership

Jason Reed built a company from his second bedroom into a 3,500-employee business with five brands across the nation. He's coached CEOs for 15 years, failed at over 30 companies, and lost tens of millions of dollars along the way.

But in March of 2018, Jason experienced the loss no parent should ever face — his 14-year-old son took his own life.

That moment changed everything. It changed how he leads, how he shows up for his people, and why he now dedicates his life to making sure no other parent misses what he missed.

In this episode of The Impactful Leader, host Chris sits down with Jason to talk about:

Why he calls himself a "builder of people" — not a CEO

What 30+ business failures taught him that success never could

"Failure is an event, not an identity" — how to bounce back without losing yourself

Why discipline and written goals separate leaders from dreamers

The signs of mental health struggles he wishes he'd recognized sooner

Why frontline managers MUST be equipped for mental health conversations

How leading with vulnerability creates stronger teams — and real ROI

"Do your employees want to give you a hug? If not, you're doing something wrong."

This is one of the most honest conversations we've ever had on this podcast.

What Moves You A Different Way to Think About Mental Health

In this episode of The Amanda Kaufman Show, I’m joined by Dana Christian Lee for a deeply human conversation about mental health, storytelling, and why asking a different question can change everything.

Instead of starting with what’s broken, Dana invites us to start with presence. With curiosity. With the question: What moves you?

We talk about why film opens conversations that advice often can’t, how young people experience pressure and disconnection, and why so many adults lose touch with what actually lights them up.

This is a conversation about shifting from performance to presence, from problem-focused thinking to possibility, and from managing life to actually feeling it again.

If you care about mental health, connection, or creating spaces where people feel seen without being fixed, this episode will stay with you.

           Episode Overview:

This episode welcomes Dana Christian Lee, Executive Director of Tell My Story, an organization dedicated to suicide prevention and fostering authentic conversations between young people and their families. Dana discusses her own mental health journey, the heartbreaking loss that inspired Tell My Story, and the organization’s evolution from raw storytelling to providing tools for upstream prevention and hope. Kathryn and Dana offer practical guidance for parents, share anecdotes from their work with youth, and examine why presence, curiosity, and vulnerability are key in navigating life’s hardest moments.

5 Key Lessons from This Episode:

           1) Communication Builds Connection—Even When It’s Hard

Both adolescents and parents often hesitate to share or ask difficult questions out of fear or worry about becoming a burden. Dana emphasizes that true connection starts with genuine, heartfelt communication—even when those conversations feel uncomfortable. The Tell My Story card game was created to bridge these gaps, offering questions that encourage trust and authentic dialogue.

           2) Meeting Loved Ones Where They Are

One major challenge for parents is the urge to ‘fix’ or rescue their child. Dana encourages families to focus on presence and nonjudgmental listening instead. She stresses that change is personal, and often the best way to help is by allowing your child’s experience to unfold while being a steady, supportive presence.

           3) The Power of Storytelling and Shared Vulnerability

Dana and Kathryn highlight how sharing our own struggles—especially as adults—can break down walls with younger generations. When parents openly admit to imperfection and talk about their failures, they model resilience and encourage children to do the same. Vulnerability builds connection across generations.

           4) Small Steps Cultivate Hope and Resilience

Practicing presence, even for sixty silent seconds a day, can make a difference. Dana notes that self-care isn’t selfish—it’s foundational. By stacking small victories, we move from simply “getting through” to actually loving life. Change isn’t always dramatic; sometimes, it’s about tiny, daily actions that add up over time.

           5) Hope and Possibility Are Essential in Addressing Mental Health

After years of seeing the growing mental health crisis, Dana’s new film, “Shift: Do What Moves You,” focuses on inspiring hope and possibility. The episode stresses the importance of shifting narratives away from problem and crisis toward potential, passion, and purpose, reminding listeners that everyone has the capacity to rediscover joy.

It is our responsibility as parents to care for our children’s mental health just as we do their physical health. We nourish them with food, support healthy sleep, and make space for time outdoors in fresh air. Tending to our kids’ mental health matters just as much. This can be as simple as opening up conversation with them.

In this episode, I’m joined by Jason Reid, an entrepreneur, father, and founder of Tell My Story, an organization dedicated to transforming how families, schools, and communities talk about mental health.

Jason shares the heartbreaking story that changed his life forever – the loss of his 14-year-old son – and how that experience led him to dedicate his life to helping parents better understand, recognize, and support their children’s mental health.

Jason reminds us that mental health is not something to react to once there’s a crisis. It’s something we must actively take responsibility for, just like our kids’ physical health.

Today I’m talking with Jason Reid about one of the hardest parts of parenting: having real, honest conversations with our kids about the things nobody wants to bring up. The messy things. The scary things. The things we hope aren’t happening—but often are.

Jason shares his family’s story of losing his 14-year-old son to suicide, and the gained wisdom he’s sharing with all of us. He reveals the number one mistake we simply cannot afford to make as parents, and how small shifts in our conversations can genuinely protect our kids.

My guest today is Dana Christian Lee. Dana Christian Lee is a devoted mom to two incredible humans, William and Grace Christian. Originally from Michigan, they made the move to Northern California in 2019—and quickly discovered that Petaluma felt like home for the soul. Dana holds two degrees in education along with certifications in yoga and mindfulness. With over 25 years of teaching experience, she’s worked across elementary and middle schools, religious education programs, and wellness spaces—blending heart, purpose, and presence into every setting. Her lifelong passion lies in supporting physical and mental well-being within community—creating access to resources, connection, and meaningful conversations. In January 2023, Dana joined Tell My Story, a nonprofit that helps parents prioritize their children's mental health with the same commitment they give to physical health—using the power of film, music, and open communication to spark change, healing, and vibrant living. She is the executive director as well as producer of their upcoming youth documentary film, "Let's Go..." which premieres Fall 2025. In this episode we discuss mental health, Tell My Story, advocacy, parenting and suicide prevention.

Losing a child is an unimaginable pain, one that Jason Reed knows all too well after the heartbreaking loss of his 14-year-old son, Ryan, to suicide. This tragedy became the catalyst for Jason’s mission to transform despair into hope by advocating for youth mental health. Through projects like his powerful film "Tell My Story" and his impactful TEDx talks, Jason is determined to bridge the generational gap and address the unprecedented pressures faced by today’s youth. From the relentless academic demands to the pervasive reach of digital connectivity, Jason shares profound insights into the unique challenges that shape the mental well-being of young people today.

Communication emerges as a cornerstone of support in our conversation with Jason, as he stresses the importance of being present and listening to children without the urge to fix or solve. By using the metaphor of clear skies and clouds, Jason helps us understand the complexities of mental health issues like depression and anxiety from a child's perspective. It becomes clear that prioritizing mental health with the same care as physical health is essential for creating a safe space for children to share their emotions. Jason's approach aligns with fostering open dialogue, empowering parents to become attentive listeners, and easing the emotional burdens kids often carry in silence.

Beyond his advocacy, Jason is a creative force, channeling his experiences into storytelling through novels, screenplays, and his YouTube series "Ghost Town USA." His commitment to mental health advocacy is matched by a fervor for engaging conversations, evident in his choice of hypothetical dinner guests like the Pope, Vladimir Putin, and Volodymyr Zelensky. As we wrap up this episode, we reflect on the power of podcasting as a tool for sharing transformative insights and experiences, encouraging our listeners to spread this episode like a gift, one that could bring understanding and support to someone’s life. We also navigate the complexities of family communication in mental health, guided by insights from renowned experts like Brene Brown. The barriers between parents and children often hinder open dialogue, but tools like the "Tell My Story" card game offer innovative solutions. By fostering deeper connections through thought-provoking questions, we emphasize the importance of sharing vulnerabilities and being present, even if just for a few moments a day. Our conversation takes a lighthearted turn as we imagine a dinner with Vivek Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General, to discuss his influential work on youth mental health. Join us as we explore these meaningful interactions and the paths to authentic storytelling and connection.

In this special episode of the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast, I had the privilege to interview Jason Reid, founder of Tell My Story (www.tellmystory.org) and Choose Life (www.chooselife.org). May is Mental Health Awareness month, and Jason, who lost his 14-year-old son to suicide, is determined to reach every parent and every family about the conversation they need to be having with their kids.

I think we can all agree that when we were kids, things were much different than they are today. Most of us probably spent our days racing our bikes, building forts, and chasing frogs around the pond.

The fact is, our kids are growing up in the middle of a raging mental health crisis. It’s no wonder why anxiety and depression are on the rise among teenagers with all the pressure to succeed or be popular with unrealistic expectations fueled by social media, or worse, by their parents. I’m thrilled to have Jason Reid with me today for another conversation on this important topic. Jason is a partner at CEO Coaching International, where he coaches top executives on achieving success. Tragically, after losing his 14-year-old son to suicide in 2018, Jason’s focus shifted to helping other families navigate the complex world of mental health.

In 2018, Jason Reid and his wife, the parents of four teens, went away for the weekend, only to experience the most harrowing moment for any parent: their youngest son Ryan — age 14 — texted to say he was going to kill himself.

On this episode of the Got Mental Health Podcast, Rachel and Arthur sit down with Jason Reid, a family man and entrepreneur who founded the foundation Tell My Story after the tragic suicide of his son Ryan. Jason shares his story of grief and how he turned his pain into a mission to end teen suicide. In this episode, they discuss ways for parents to talk to their kids about mental health and not dismiss warning signs. Jason also talks about the importance of showing vulnerability with our children and creating a safe space for them to share their feelings. Don’t miss this important conversation on supporting our children’s mental health.

“Parents and teachers have tried to outsource kids’ mental health, but there simply aren’t enough therapists in the U.S. to deal with the current crisis,” noted Reid, a successful entrepreneur who initiated this program after the tragic suicide of his 14-year-old son. “We stop everything to care for our kids when they’re physically sick, and now we need to turn that caregiving towards their mental health. Parents must learn how to ask questions, how to engage and most importantly, how to listen. Our kids’ mental health is the most critical aspect to their health and success, so we must use every tool to learn how to parent in these challenging times.”
