A Father’s Mission: Turning Tragedy Into Hope Through Storytelling
Jason Reid never saw the warning signs. Eight years ago, his 14-year-old son died by suicide, leaving behind a note with a simple message: “Tell my story.” That moment changed everything. Instead of allowing grief to fracture his family or consume his life, Reid made a decision—to turn tragedy into purpose. He began sharing his son’s story publicly, using film, speaking, and storytelling to reach others who might be silently struggling.
Through his nonprofit and films like Shift, Reid focuses on something many people overlook: the importance of having something in life that excites you. Beyond school, work, and daily responsibilities, he believes people—especially kids—need a creative outlet or passion that gives them a reason to get out of bed. Whether it’s art, music, sports, or storytelling, these “I want to” moments help balance a life often dominated by “I have to.” His message resonates deeply in schools, where students connect with real stories of peers who found strength through creativity.
Reid admits the work is still painful. Sharing his story doesn’t heal the loss—it keeps the memory alive. But stopping isn’t an option. He believes that even if his efforts help just one person, it’s worth it. With hundreds of school screenings, films, and talks, his mission continues to grow: to remind people they’re not alone, to encourage them to create and connect, and to make sure his son’s story leads to hope for others. #PiZetta Media
